Remai Modern’s popular Looking Up fundraising series has returned in 2022 with one-of-a-kind events themed after exhibitions at the museum. June’s event featured artist Adrian Stimson, based on the first-ever survey of his work Maanipokaa’iini. See highlights from the event through this photo series by Carey Shaw.

A Conversation with Adrian Stimson and Tarah Hogue

Adrian Stimson (b. 1964) is a member of the Siksika (Blackfoot) Nation in southern Alberta. Across installation, painting, photography, video and performance, Stimson’s works re-signify colonial history using both humour and counter-memory.

Evening Performance with Wild Black

Having fronted bands since she was fifteen years old, Elsa Gebremichael — Wild Black — has many years of experience in the Canadian music scene and continues to grow as an independent musician, songwriter, producer and performer. She’s toured throughout Europe and North America, showcased at festivals such as SXSW, NXNE, HPX, CMJ and BIME in Spain and The Great Escape, has opened for Janelle Monae, Tegan and Sara and Metric, was nominated for a Western Canadian Music Award for Pop Recording of the Year, and played at the first Afropunk Music Festival in NYC. She has played and written songs in a variety of genres throughout her life and has influences that range from Rock to Pop to Disco, Soul and RnB.
