Colour Theory: The LUGO All Together Now Lookbook

LUGO, Remai Modern’s annual art bash and fundraiser, is back on March 4 with the theme All Together Now.

With art infused in every part of the event, from the performers to the drink menu, it’s the perfect night to model your own creativity. There’s no official dress code, but we encourage attendees to get creative and use the theme to influence their own personal style.

Every great outfit starts with inspiration, so we asked a team of local creatives to make a look book of cohesive stylings that attendees can draw on. Creative directors Molly Schikosky and Aldeneil Española chose a selection of outfits that are coordinated, playful and colourful, drawing on classic fashion principles that everyone can use.

Española has provided some extra insight and hints on how to interpret their visuals:

This year’s LUGO All Together Now is about the exploration of community and connection. LUGO is an exciting time to dress up, soak up art and celebrate life. The dress code always reflects the theme of LUGO, and this year is no different. This year’s dress code is all about “altogether-ness” – group outfits, colour blocking, and monochromatic looks. If group outfits aren’t your thing, you are more than welcome to live your best life and be uniquely you! The overall theme colours this year are blue, pink, purple and green, but we encourage you to have fun using different colours.

Let’s dive deeper into the theme and explore the different concepts:

This year’s dress code theme relies on colours. Whether you are coming in as a team or attending solo, come celebrate and be a part of Saskatoon’s biggest art party. Colours help shape our society and are an active contributor to our current zeitgeist. They provide meaning and important symbolism. Colour psychology is constantly studied and used literally everywhere, from street signs to the clothes we wear to art therapy. Green is naturally representative of nature, and it also represents purity, vitality and money. Purple is said to represent luxury, power and mystery. Blue is for trust and peace, also water and sky. Pink is representative of playfulness. We encourage you to look up more colour psychology as it will open your eyes to the power and possibilities of colour, and will help deepen your appreciation for the variety of shades we see every day.

Colour blocking is the use of two or more colours, most commonly complimentary colours, to build an outfit. Colour blocking is visually dynamic, and is able to invoke varying feelings to the observer. The best way to make use of colour blocking and enjoy it is to experiment and play dress up. Put aside some time to create your outfit, try it on, look in the mirror and assess how you feel. Colour blocking is all about the relationships of colour: a blue + green will look and feel different than a blue + orange. Your eyes are powerful; you will be able to tell whether the colour combinations you use compliments or clash together by just looking at it. Note that clashing colours are not necessarily a bad thing! We encourage you to play with the feelings different colour combinations bring.

Monochromatic styling is about using one colour, sometimes with varying hues, to build an outfit. Hues means the variety of colours. For example, red + orange red + maroon, they all have hues of red in them. Monochromatic styling is straightforward and sophisticated when it meets the eyes, and it also helps you appear taller and elongated. If you are not accustomed to combining colours, then monochromatic styling will be your go-to. The important thing to watch out for is fit. Since it’s one colour, the overall shape and silhouette of your outfit will be pronounced. Therefore, it’s important to wear an outfit that compliments your overall body and shape.

Colour tip: How do I know if a colour suits my skin tone?

Our skin is a colour and it plays a unique role when it comes to the clothes we wear. Some of us have warm, neutral or cool undertones. This is why sometimes when we put on a piece of clothing and we look in the mirror, we get a feeling that something is not right. Here’s an easy way to tell if a colour suits your skin tone: Stand in front of the mirror, preferably under natural, bright light, wrap the piece of clothing around your neck and head (if it allows) and smile. Observe the whites of your teeth and the whites of your eyes. If they appear yellow, that means that colour clashes with your skin tone. However, if they appear white then that colour compliments your skin tone.
